Sonic Collective – Kobyz with Tokzhan Karatai (WAV)
The kobyz is a traditional Kazakh instrument with roots in shamanic culture. Made from wood and camel skin with horsehair strings, it has a unique timbre capable of imitating the human voice, wind, water and animal sounds.
Recorded in Ankara and performed by Tokzhan Karatai, this sample pack draws on traditional Kazakh culture, with the kobyz imitating totem animals such as horses and swans.
Tokzhan Karatay is a composer and musician from Kazakhstan who is dedicated to preserving and renewing the kobyz tradition through performance and teaching. Combining a deep knowledge of folklore with a passion for experimental classical music, she strives to overcome cultural differences in her compositions.
