Gio Israel – The Flutes of the Andes (WAV)

Kena is an ancient wind instrument.

Throughout history, the Andean flutes of South America have gained wide recognition and captivated listeners around the world. Their sound has accompanied the indigenous cultures of the Andean region for centuries. Among them, the quena, a traditional wind instrument that has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Andean music, has a special place, with a rich history and cultural significance. The quena serves as an embodiment of cultural identity and a way to preserve the traditions of the Andean peoples, while enchanting listeners with its magical melodies and emotional depth.

In this series of recordings, we are proud to present Peruvian maestro Quique Pinto. As a child, he moved from the Andes to Lima, and then dedicated his life to traveling the Andes and Amazon, studying the origins of the local musical tradition – instruments, vocal techniques and sounds – in order to create his own music and songs. His collection includes one of the largest collections of authentic flutes and instruments of the region, and he has become a true ambassador for the indigenous music of Peru and the Andes.
